Pekalongan (10/08/2023) – In the third week of the activities of TIM II KKN Undip 2022/2023 in Werdi Village, Paninggaran District, Pekalongan Regency, a Monodisciplinary Program was carried out by Nida Fauziyah (22), a student of the Chemistry study program, Faculty of Science and Mathematics class of 2020. The Monodisciplinary Program carried out is the Making of Liquid Organic Fertilizer from Catfish Pond Wastewater.

Catfish farming often causes environmental pollution, especially from unpleasant odors and poor sewerage. Catfish pond water has the potential to contain nutrients needed by plants, especially N and P elements, which greatly support the growth and development of plant roots.

The element of nitrogen absorbed by plants affects the process of photosynthesis, the results of which are used for the formation of plant parts, including the formation and growth of leaves. Nitrogen serves to increase plant growth, leaf growth, increase protein levels in the plant body.  So this can increase the efficiency of using inorganic fertilizers whose price has increased.

Picture 2. Poster Explaining How to Make Liquid Organic Fertilizer from Catfish Pond Water Waste

Seeing this great potential, the waste from catfish ponds can be used as raw material for liquid organic fertilizer. First of all, catfish waste water is mixed with brown sugar and also EM4. EM4 serves as a decomposer of fertilizer and brown sugar as food for the bacteria contained in EM4. Then the above mixture is mixed into water with a ratio of 1:10. Liquid organic fertilizer from catfish pond wastewater can be used immediately.

From this program, it is expected that the combined farmer groups (GAPOKTAN) can utilize catfish cultivation waste into liquid organic fertilizer that is more economically valuable and not disposed of polluting the environment around the cultivation site. For catfish farmers, besides being able to raise catfish, they can also produce liquid organic fertilizer products that can be sold and get additional income.
