Pemalang, 9 August 2024 – Undip Team II Field and Work Force (KKN) Students for the 2023/2024 Period carried out the manufacture of anti-mosquito spray made from lemongrass as an effort to repel Dengue Fever mosquitoes. The program was conducted by Andi Nugroho, a student from the Chemistry Department of Diponegoro University, for the members of the PKK and Posyandu cadres.
Each year, there are deaths caused by dengue fever in Bulu Village. It is one of the villages where the majority of the population works as rice farmers. The standing water in the area provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The abundance of dengue-carrying mosquitoes increases the risk of contracting the disease.
Lemongrass is a plant that contains geraniol and citronellal, which function as mosquito repellents. The distinctive aroma of geraniol and citronellal is disliked by mosquitoes. Therefore, lemongrass is suitable as a base ingredient for making natural mosquito repellent sprays. This lemongrass-based mosquito spray is very safe to use, especially for children’s sensitive skin.
The process of making lemongrass into anti-mosquito spray begins by thoroughly washing fresh lemongrass and then cutting it into small pieces. After that, the lemongrass is crushed using a blender or mortar and pestle until finely ground. The crushed lemongrass is then boiled with just enough water to submerge the lemongrass, ensuring a more concentrated extract. Boil until the water turns brown and the lemongrass aroma is noticeable. Afterward, strain or press the lemongrass to extract the liquid, then store it in a sealed container and let it sit overnight. Mix the lemongrass extract with alcohol to extend its shelf life. Finally, pour the lemongrass extract into a spray bottle.
The response from the PKK members and Posyandu cadres during the explanation of making anti-mosquito spray was very positive. They were actively involved in the activity, asking questions and engaging in open discussions about the mosquito repellent spray. Through this activity, it is hoped that the use and application of lemongrass in repelling mosquitoes can be further expanded. This program is also expected to benefit the residents of Bulu Village in maintaining the community’s health.
