Sragen (18/07/2024) – In the first week of TIM II KKN UNDIP 2023/2024 activities in Wonorejo Village, Kalijambe District, Sragen Regency, a monodisciplinary program was implemented by Lisaana Sidqy Aliyaan (21), a Chemistry study program student from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Batch 2021. The Monodisplin program that was carried out invited the community to care more about the environment by sorting organic and inorganic waste.
Wonorejo Village consists of 17 RT, all of which still combine organic and inorganic waste disposal so that when there is a buildup it causes an unpleasant odor. Villagers also still burn waste because there is no landfill system in Wonorejo Village, which has an impact on air pollution levels and global warming. Another way the community treats waste is by burying it in the ground, which also has an impact on soil pollution.

Seeing this great potential, the community was given material on raising awareness of waste management and the waste sorting program system to be carried out. The organic waste collected from the villagers is the main base material that will be processed into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer to fertilize the plants in the villagers’ gardens and rice fields. Meanwhile, inorganic waste such as plastic bottles and food packaging is the base material for making ecobricks as a strong and durable alternative building material.

The program begins by collecting inorganic and organic waste that has been separated personally from the community’s homes with the help of the Wonorejo village karangtaruna children, then the inorganic waste is taken to the scrap collector to separate the types of keresek plastic waste, plastic packaging and used mineral water bottles which will become the basic ingredients of ecobric and the rest of the inorganic waste is sold to collectors with the proceeds going into the cash of the PKK mothers.

This program is expected to be a starting point for the Wonorejo Village community to continue to be committed to sorting waste and protecting the environment from all forms of pollution. With the awareness of the entire village community, it is hoped that the waste sorting program can be sustainable and become part of the community’s lifestyle.
