On Monday 17 April 2023, the Department of Chemistry at Diponegoro University celebrated the addition of an important educational instrument, a new fume hood, which has been successfully installed in the Basic Chemistry Laboratory. Fume hood is one of the essential tools in a chemistry laboratory, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of laboratory users and maintaining the quality of chemistry education.

A fume hood is a specially designed apparatus for safely storing hazardous chemicals, such as acids and other corrosive chemicals. In a chemistry laboratory, the use of potentially harmful chemicals to human health is a matter of great importance. With the presence of a fume hood, the risks of accidents and contamination from chemicals can be significantly reduced, allowing laboratory users, including students, lecturers, and support staff, to work more safely and comfortably.

In addition to ensuring safety, fume hood also plays a role in maintaining the quality of chemistry education. In a chemistry laboratory, the quality of experiments and experimental results greatly depends on the consistency and stability of the chemicals used. With the presence of a fume hood, vapor chemicals can be stored properly under controlled conditions and ventilation. This will ensure that the chemicals used in chemistry experiments remain in optimal conditions.

The addition of a new fume hood in the Basic Chemistry Laboratory at Diponegoro University is a significant step in enhancing safety and quality of chemistry education. In this article, we will explore some of the main benefits obtained from the introduction of the new fume hood in the laboratory.

  • Enhanced Safety: The use of hazardous chemicals in a chemistry laboratory can pose serious risks to users. With the presence of a fume hood, corrosive and hazardous chemicals can be safely stored in tightly sealed containers, reducing the risk of exposure to harmful substances for laboratory users. Moreover, fume hood is equipped with a proper ventilation system to reduce exposure to hazardous fumes. This will help ensure the safety of laboratory users, including students, lecturers, and support staff, allowing them to work more confidently and comfortably.
  • Protection against Cross-Contamination: In a chemistry laboratory, cross-contamination between chemicals can occur, leading to inaccurate experimental results. With the presence of a fume hood, chemicals can be stored separately in dedicated compartments, preventing cross-contamination. This will help maintain the integrity of the experiments and ensure reliable results, contributing to the quality of chemistry education.
  • Compliance with Safety Regulations: The installation of a fume hood in the laboratory is in line with the safety regulations and guidelines for chemistry laboratories. It demonstrates the commitment of Diponegoro University to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for its students and staff. The fume hood is designed to meet the standard requirements for ventilation, containment, and exhaust, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Improved Teaching and Learning Experience: The presence of a fume hood in the laboratory enhances the teaching and learning experience in chemistry education. It provides a safe and controlled environment for conducting experiments, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills in a safe and supervised manner. The reliable results obtained from experiments conducted in a fume hood also contribute to the accuracy and quality of the learning process.

In conclusion, the introduction of a new fume hood in the Basic Chemistry Laboratory at Diponegoro University has significantly improved safety and quality of chemistry education. The fume hood ensures the safety of laboratory users, prevents cross-contamination, complies with safety regulations, and enhances the teaching and learning experience. It is a valuable addition to the laboratory.
