Semarang, August 12, 2023 – The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) has taken a significant step in enhancing the quality of education by adopting an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Curriculum. On Friday, August 11, 2023, the Department of Chemistry at FSM Undip held a workshop on the technical guidance for curriculum review at the Aruss Hotel in Semarang. The aim was to develop and update the curriculum in line with the latest educational paradigm.
The main sharing session was led by Prof. Is Fatimah, a leading education expert in the field of chemistry. In her presentation, Prof. Is Fatimah outlined the work and insights she had contributed regarding the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Curriculum. The effort is geared towards ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the workforce and the rapid developments in the field of knowledge.
The OBE Curriculum emphasizes measurable and observable learning outcomes. Its primary goal is to ensure that every graduate possesses skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are relevant to the needs of society and industry. This approach aids students in developing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and effective communication skills.
The event was attended by all faculty members and educational staff (tendik) of the Department of Chemistry at FSM Undip. Participants attentively listened to Prof. Is Fatimah’s presentation on the fundamental concepts of the Outcome-Based Education Curriculum and engaged in an intensive discussion regarding crucial aspects of curriculum development and the importance of integrating this approach into the teaching process.
However, during the interactive discussion following the presentation, several questions arose that highlighted certain aspects requiring further clarification in the development of the OBE curriculum. Participants critically discussed these questions with the speaker, acknowledging the necessity for collective effort to address these ambiguities.
In order to address these concerns, the Department of Chemistry at FSM Undip has taken concrete steps. They have formed a small team composed of specific faculty members with deep knowledge of the chemistry subject. This team is responsible for refining and enhancing the aspects lacking in the development of the Outcome-Based Education Curriculum at the Department of Chemistry. Through this synergistic collaboration, it is anticipated that an innovative and relevant new curriculum aligned with the demands of the era will soon be finalized.
Adi Darmawan, Ph.D the chair of the Department of Chemistry, stated, “The implementation of the Outcome-Based Education Curriculum is a significant milestone in enhancing the quality of education at the Department of Chemistry at FSM Undip. Through this approach, we hope our graduates will be well-equipped to make maximum contributions to the workforce and society.”
With this initiative, Universitas Diponegoro remains committed to providing high-quality and adaptable education. The implementation of the Outcome-Based Education Curriculum in the Department of Chemistry at FSM Undip is expected to serve as an inspirational example for other departments facing the challenges of education in the global era.
