Beji , (14/08/2024) – Chemistry students who are members of 2023/2024 Diponegoro University KKN Team II successfully held educational and practical activities for making natural pesticides made from onion skins at the Beji Village PKK activities . This activity took place on August 12 2024 at the Beji Village Hall , attended by members of the Beji Village PKK .
Ranina Salsabila, Undip Chemistry Student, introduced an environmentally friendly natural pesticide innovation by utilizing waste onion and garlic skins, which are often no longer used and simply thrown away. In her presentation, Ranina explained that onion skin contains flavonoids and acetogenin which functions as a natural antimicrobial and insecticide, making it effective in controlling various types of plant pests.
In the process of making this natural pesticide you only need red/white onion skins, water and unused drinking bottles. Ranina asked 1-2 women members of the PKK to participate in practicing the making process. In the initial holding, the ingredients that have been prepared are put into a bottle or bottles, then add water until it is full and close the bottle tightly. This skin soak is fermented or left for 2 days and can then be used as a pesticide for plants. Apart from the practice of making it, Ranina also explained the procedure for applying the onion skin soaking results. First, put 10 bottle caps of water from fermented onion skins into 1 liter of water, or a ratio of (20:1) . Shake until it feels mixed, then the solution can be used on plants.
During the practical session, the participants were very enthusiastic and actively asked questions and took notes on what was explained. Chairperson of the Beji Village PKK , Mrs. Nur Mahmudah, in her speech appreciated the innovation carried out by Undip Chemistry students. He hopes that the knowledge provided can be applied sustainably, so that people can reduce the use of chemical pesticides which are dangerous for the environment and health.
