Kemuning, Karanganyar – The Community Service (Abdimas) Team from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) organized a training program entitled “Black Garlic Production as a Supplement to Improve Community Health” in Kemuning Village, Ngargoyoso District, Karanganyar Regency, on Saturday (May 10, 2025).

The event was attended by dozens of members of the PKK women’s group from RT 03 RW 04, Ngargoyoso Kemuning Sub-village. Participants enthusiastically learned about the benefits and production process of black garlic, a fermented garlic product known for its high antioxidant content and various health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, lowering cholesterol levels, and helping prevent degenerative diseases.

The training was delivered interactively by the Abdimas Team from the Department of Chemistry, FSM UNDIP, covering topics from the introduction of raw materials, fermentation procedures, to proper storage techniques. Participants also had the opportunity to directly practice black garlic production, enabling them to reproduce it independently at home.

In addition to raising public awareness of healthy living, the training aimed to create new business opportunities based on local potential. Garlic, the main raw material, is easily accessible, the production process is simple, and the final product has high market value. As part of their support, the Abdimas Team provided rice cookers to assist household-scale production at the neighborhood level.

The activity received positive responses from the community. Mrs. Mulyanti, Head of RT 03 RW 04, expressed her appreciation to the Abdimas Team from the Department of Chemistry, FSM UNDIP:

“We are very happy to learn how to make black garlic. Hopefully, this knowledge can be an additional source of income while keeping our families healthy,” she said.

Through this program, the people of Kemuning are expected to not only gain greater awareness of healthy lifestyles but also to be able to transform local potential into marketable products. In the future, residents can produce black garlic independently for family consumption or develop it into a village flagship product to improve the local economy.
